Food: 7⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This idiosyncratic bistro serves up some tasty dishes in its own particular way. There is a set menu very reasonably priced at €29, though whether that includes three or four courses varies. Every meal begins with Ambrosia’s signature vegetable soup, then a choice between say asparagus and goats’ cheese souffle, and a main course such as pot roast pork belly, braised lamb shanks, or local sea bass fillets. Other specials are on the daily board, not so reasonably priced, quite often including ‘quail stuffed with walnuts and veal’ which is excellent. Punters rarely make it to dessert.

Atmosphere: 7⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Situated in the heart of Valletta, this bistro is a convenient escape from the hustle and bustle. The atmosphere is very warm and cozy which is ideal on winter evenings, with low lighting and darker colours reminiscent of yesteryear. Ambrosia works well for a low-key romantic tryst. Tables have coloured tablecloths but are a little small if you are a party of four. The crowd varies by day and season, though tourists are of course present and there is always a good smattering of locals. All the fabrics ensure it is rarely noisy.

Service: 6 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Service depends hugely on whether the owner, Chris, is in the house or not. If not, there can be elements of confusion, not least over the complexities of the menu, and you can expect to pour your own wine. The latter is an issue. The wine list is a pure work of fiction as most often only a handful are available, and you have to ask, “What red wines have you got tonight?” The waiter will prefer three or four, obviously be careful to check the price.
